ArtPlugged.co.uk article "The Body Room Examines The Expectations of the Female Anatomy"

A roving project created by Emma Shapiro and Katherine Brown, launched from Valencia, Spain. The Body Room was created to give guests a space to express themselves safely in any way they choose. We provide paper on the wall and floor, a pile of art supplies, and an hour in complete privacy.

Who is The Body Room for?

Previously The Body Room was exclusively open to female-identifying participants, as we began the project with the intention of responding to the expectations specifically placed upon women. We now believe that The Body Room ought to be available to any body who needs it, as a space to reflect upon, explore, and challenge the societal expectations we all face.

How does it work?

Our guests make an appointment to spend one hour alone in The Body Room. The room is set up with a large expanse of blank paper on the wall and floor, and a table of art supplies. Guests are provided with a thorough explanation of the project and what to expect before their appointment, and are assured of their safety and privacy during their time in The Body Room.

What happens to the artwork created in The Body Room?

After their hour, our guests are provided with the option to keep their work, have their work confidentially disposed of, or they may donate their work to The Body Room. They are asked to sign a release form in the case they choose to donate their work — this will assure them that their privacy will always be respected and their name, nor any other identifying feature will ever be used by The Body Room.

The Body Room is bilingual, offered both in fluent English and Spanish.
